Snap to black problems

Can anybody tell me about snapping to black using an ION with the latest version of software?

Problems are as follows: I am getting mixed results with snap to black commands. I am controlling 112 ColorSource Spots and 4 ROBE Robin DL4S's with an ETC ION V2.3.3. Sometimes I WILL get an immediate intensity out and sometimes I will get a 1 or 2 second FADE to black despite a cue time of 0 and no discrete timings but it is not consistent through the whole rig.

This problem is present with Cue times of 0 and when manually sending a ch @ OUT command.

My system is sending data to the ColorSource spots over sACN to ETC Nodes / single channel gateways and out from there to DMX. The ROBE's are stricly sACN, no gateways inbetween.

I don't believe it to be a data speed problem as a straight to black command would result in a lag rather than a fade out.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Edit: Just an update on this, I only experience a slow fade out when snapping to black when the instruments are at low levels. This does not seem to be a problem when they are a full then go to black

  • Hi Jay, I isolated the instrument and even took a spare and used a dmx tester. It seems that with the DL4S any intensity below 58 percent causes the emitters to fade rather than snap. I still haven't had time to dive in to fully testing the ColorSource Spots in this manner but they behave similarly from what I have observed.

I have not figured out if the spots all behave the same on one node or on the same loop but I will check that out.

I believe that the starting intensity is what is causing it but again, have to test that specifically.

    Thanks.
  • When looking at the dmx stream via the dmx tester are you seeing that fade for the DL4S below 58%, or is only the fixture behaving accordingly? If you are seeing it on the data line I would try saving your show and doing a deep clear and then restore your show and try again. If you still see the problem this could be a bug with something on that profile maybe... If it is not showing up on the tester, but it is on the fixture that would point to a fixture issue... Let us know if the CSS do the same...
  • Hi Seth! I am so sorry for the huge delay in response, opening night was last night and of course the last 48 hours were hectic.

I have attempted to do as you suggested and since then I have discovered the following:

The CSS's will snap to black only if intensity is 40% and above
The Robe DL4S's will do the same when the dimmer curve is set to linear but will only snap to black at 58% and up if the curve is set to square law.

I've determined that it's not the console and have also emailed etc tech service and ROBE.

    Thanks!
