accessing individual pixels

I am looking at purchasing some ADJ Dotz 3.3 fixtures. They are 3x3 moving head cob rgb led's. I am doing some pre-purchase testing on one with my ION at this time.

Some people say no question is a dumb question but I definitely think I found one; even though it is a serious one.

There are no Number macros: macros that can cause the 9 pixels or cells to light as numbers 1 - 0. However in 38 channel mode each pixel or cell has a fixture address. ie: red 1 is fixture channel 5. green 1 is fixture channel 6. blue 1 is fixture channel 7. and of course those are for the first cob or cell (top left). Then it repeats for red 2, green 2 and blue 2 (top center) all the way to red 9, green 9 and blue 9 (bottom right).

Is there any way to address these individual attributes using the ION console and saving them as macros so I can do countdowns and other alpha/numeric visuals or does this need to be done by the individual manufacture of the fixtures; in this case ADJ?

  • I have been wondering about moving heads and pixel maps. Today i loaded up Nomad 2.5 build 50 and i was able to patch the dotz 3.3 illusion moving heads as a pixel map in 38 channel mode. YAY! This will allow you to send bitmap images to an array of these heads. The console sees them as units with 9 emitters and will spread your content across the grid.
Alternately you can use the Intensity palette/preset function to manually store values for each digit.
  • I still am on a learning curve for pixel mapping and wondered if that was my answer however this morning something else hit me.
I would think that since the fixture in extended mode in the library has 9 reds, 9 greens and 9 blues (36 fixture channels) that when I open the ML Controls there should be access to 9 individual controls for red, 9 for green and 9 for blue (red 1, red 2, etc) but there is not. There is only 1 for each color so I only have control over the whole array of 9 cobs. Shouldn't that be the simple answer; just control each cell through ML Controls? Where are they?
  • You're trying to get to a function that's not there yet. You have multiple instances of the same parameter that's why in ML controls you can only see one of each. You can change the personality to use Red, Red 2, Red 3, and so on. You will see them in ML controls, but you will only get a color picker for the first set
