Why did my Element stop controlling my lights?

So I recently set up my new Element 40-250.

I updated the software, patched my instruments, recorded a few subs, and everything was working fine.

Today I turn on the board and the lights do not come on.  The faders indicate their should be light.  The patching is still there.  The GM is up at full.  Black Out is not on.  The dimmers are working.  I even tried replacing the DMX cable.

I've cycled the power a few times.  Still nothing.

Thoughts....?

  • Re-patch an existing light to a new channel number and see if that can be controlled.
Is there an Inhibitive Sub buried away from the faders that might be active, and Inhibiting them?
Are the Channels Parked at 0%? (is there a P in the channel tombstone?)
park an address with a light in it to full, and see if the light comes on.
clear your command line. If a Channel is under the control of hte command line (Gold Line around the channel tombstone), sometimes cues and subs and other users can't take control of it.
Try to assert your sub, so it takes priority from other subs/cues.
Hit About: current / usage / etc. see what you can tell from that.

    Good luck.

  • None of the lights or subs are parked.
Tried a repatch and still nothing.
    Command line is empty.
No red flags on the About, usage, etc...

Is there a way to reset the board to factory default? I could restore my work pretty quickly and don't have any shows on it yet anyway...
  • Hi Phil!

Check the small yellow text above the triangle and padlock on the right-hand side of your primary display. If it says Offline, exit out to the shell and relaunch as primary.

Also how do your lights get their data? Using the DMX ports on the back of the console?
  • Logged in as Primary. Says "user 1" above the padlock.
I'm using DMX 1 for control. No LEDs or movers in my system yet. All old school fixtures. Everything is (or should be) in Universe 1). Addresses used between 1 and 190 give or take.

Going to check the dimmers again...
  • If everything appears OK with your dimmers, try moving your DMX cable to DMX 2 on your Element and change that port to start at Address 1. To change a start address for a DMX port, exit out to the Shell and navigate to Settings>Local IO. You'll see a field labeled Console I/O Card. In there, set the Port 2 Address to be 1. Then tap Accept at the bottom of the screen, launch Primary, then see if you have control.
  • In Patch, verify that you are outputting data in DMX.

Secondly, verify you are actually outputting data. The "Output" value will show what the console is actually outputting.

    If you have issues there, in Setup shell / Local I/O / Local DMX Outputs;

    - Verify that "Enable" is selected.

    - Verify that "Default Output Protocol" is selected.

    - Verify that Console I/O Card has Port 1: 1 / Port 2: 513

    - Verify that, unless you have Dimmer Doubling, that Doubling is deselected.

Go back to Patch and verify step 1.

If all of that fails, Go back to settings and enable sACN

Settings / Network / Output Protocols

Enable sACN via Ethernet / Make it Default.

    DOWNLOAD sACNView onto a computer.

    Link: http://docsteer.github.io/sacnview/

Connect the console to the computer via ethernet.

(Do you need a crossover cable for this?)

Any outputted data from the console should be displayed on sACN View.
