Are there specific settings that I need for setting up a network or do I have to keep trying different settings until I somehow end up with the right ones?

It would be helpful to have a bit more information about what you are trying to accomplish, but I will answer your question in generalities. The console is set up with a static ip address that is set to work on a network. If you have nodes, typically these would be pre-programmed with an ip, get an ip from the console, or get an ip from NCE (network configuration editor). Some of the nodes need POE (power over ethernet) which if you buy a switch from ETC with a system, that is what you will get. They are also becoming more common now, so you could probably find one at your local computer store or online. The Sensor+ racks would be preconfigured to work on the network as well. It is usually recommended that the lighting network be on its own, and not connected up with say your companies network which has the internet on it and various other traffic. The console and other accessories would probably work, but why take that risk?
I hope this answers your question, let me know and I will try and answer more specific questions.
Just an additional note on POE (Power Over Ethernet) switches. Often POE switches require advanced configuration in order work properly. When ETC sells a switch, for use in our systems, it is configured at the factory to work out of the box. I mention this to save frustration if you looking to integrate one into an existing system. If your console is an EOS, the network connections on the back of the console are already supply POE. Keep in mind that the POE does not transfer though any other switches that may be in your system. In addition, most of our "touring" nodes can be run off of an external power supply as well.
As far as your console settings are concerned, the network settings do largely depend on the way your space is setup. If you are uncomfortable applying any of these settings feel free to give me a call in Tech Services and I would be more than happy to walk you though the proper setup.
