Element 2 intermittent network problems

I have a new Element 2 vs. 2.8.2, with a dedicated network, not connected to the internet. I have a wifi for using the iRFR on a new iPad Pro only. I have a PC (also 2.8.2) hardwired to the network for using it in mirror mode only. Seems Simple?
I cannot keep the iPad connected, to the Element 2 even in LOS at 20'. The operation is intermittent.
I cannot keep the PC connected to the Element 2, even hardwired, and with the network visible to the PC. The operation is intermittent.
Yesterday, the PC worked in mirror mode, flawlessly. The iPad iRFR was 'hit & miss"
Today, the PC can't see the Element 2 at all. Yet the iPad is working fine.
I have restarted all of this gear several time, sometimes with good results, sometime not.
I'm thinking that the problem resides in my network hardware. I'm ready to throw it away.
What hardware is recommended by ETC to provide a wired & Wireless network?
Any other hints? Thanksomuch.

  • How are they actually connected to each other,  I assume you have a wifi router.  How is that configured, is it running dhcp or not.  What addresses do the 3 devices show themselves as set to?  eg 192.168.x.x.    You can see what the element thinks it is in the about tab.

Whilst its possible there is a problem with the network hardware its more likely just misconfiguration eg two dhcp servers and depending on which one serves the address the things end up effectively not being on the same network for example.

  • Thanks Mike,  I have the IP address of the Element and I can set the IP of the PC.  I do not have a way of seeing, or setting the IP of the router.  It is managed by our IT dept. and I'm not allowed to touch it.   This is why I am thinking of purchasing my own router and wifi, and want to know what ETC recommends.  I'll run some tests.  Thanks again.

  • So I have turned some things off and on again several times.  The hub, the console, the PC.  I have looked at the IP address on the Element2.  I have looked at the IP address on the PC.  They are all set to be what they should be.  I didn't change anything.

And now it all works fine.  The Element 2, the wifi'ed iPad with the iRFR and the hardwired PC in mirror mode.  All working fine, with no idea why they didn't work together, and no idea if they will work again tomorrow.    This must be an operator error.    I think I need to hire a professional to teach me what I am doing wrong.  I still welcome any opinions.  Thanks

  • As suspected,  the iPad wouldn't reconnect just an hour later.

  • I suspect you have got two dhcp servers running

What are the IP addresses and netmasks on each of the devices you can access.

Has the address of the ipad changed and/or is its netmask still the same as it was.

(for info the routers ip address is likely to be shown as the gateway ip address on the PC and ipad)

You might also find the iphone app Fing useful as it will tell you what's connected to the wifi and/or is on the same network ie the wired bits.

  • Mike A:
What could be a second server on a closed network?
I have the exact IP addresses that the ETC technician gave me over the phone on the Element 2 and the iPad.  No changes.
I have no access to the router address.  It is not my property.  I would like to own my own router.  What kind is recommended?
What is the iphone app that you mention?

  • The router can act as a dhcp server - typically if not explicitly connected to a bigger network that is how they would be setup so things can just connect to them without you manually setting ip addresses for each device (if they are connected to a bigger network then something in that network would normal be the dhcp server).

The Element 2 can also act as a dhcp server.  So if both are dhcp serving then the address (or even the network ie the front part of the address) of things could change unexpectedly and a dhcp lease time (the time the address is valid for before the device ask for the address to be renewed) can be an hour, so works fine until a renewal request goes to the other dhcp server.

When you say you have the exact IP addresses the ETC gave me over the phone on the Element 2 and the iPad are you talking about the addresses you have put in the devices to setup the connection or the address of the device itself.   ie when looking at the ipad are you referring to the address in the iRFR app for the console connection or the address you see in settings wifi when you then click the blue i in a cirle and it says things like Forget this network and Configure IP Automatic (or have you got manual) and then Ip Address 192.168.10.109 for example.

Whilst you can buy a new wifi router and basically anything you buy would work but the issue you've got is almost certainly a configuration issue and its likely you will have it with the new router as well.

More details on what exactly the ipad is showing as the ip and netmask in its settings and likewise the PC and the ip address showing in the about window will make it easier to spot the setup error.
