Tint in profiles

I sometimes see tint controls in fixture profiles as 0 - 255.  This isn't how a person's mind works, imo.

When creating a tint parameter.  -100% (Full magenta) to +100% (Full Green).  Motion Picture/TV uses -100 to +100 with 0 = no tint. Since Magenta/Green gels (i.e. Lee, Rosco, Gam) come in +/- eighth, quarter, half, full variety, the language in the Motion Picture industry is still “Let’s add quarter Magenta to that light”.  With a Tint of 0 = no tint, and where minus refers to “minus green”, aka Magenta.

That's how things work in our industry at least.  Not sure how the theatre world does it, but I can’t imagine anyone thinks in 0 - 255 for tint.

  • theatre doesn't use Tint. ok, that might be a bit general, but since theatre designs for human eye that does its own white balance we rarely care about tint.

i think the problem is the dmx-sheets of the manufacturers in general and with those from tv/film fixture especially. most dmx-sheets i see for fixtures targeted at that industry are cryptic at best.

having said that, i wouldn't have a problem with setting the home for tint at 127, but that assumes that the ranges within that address are symmetrical. i looked at an arri dmx-sheet and the center neutral value is 120-145, so as long as the exact definition of the tint channel isn't detailed in the manufacturer's documentation i think the best approach is to have no details, rather than have wrong details.
