How can I make this work next time?

It's Dance Recital Season again.  We all know how this works- 30 or 40 songs.  Each song gets a cue or two.  If you see a rehearsal, its not in show order.  Many schools do several shows that are nearly indentical but in a different order.  I do these in Cue Only mode.

I do all my fades manually using several layered Inhibitives and advance the cues while dark.  When preparing for the next and subsequent shows, it is neccessary to rearrange the cue order.  [The Copy To/Move To is GREAT and easy! ] About half the cues have an Effect or two or five running.  [Putting Effects into some cues and not in others is AWESOME and easy! ]  However, once you start moving cues, the rules of Cue Only no longer apply to the Effects.  My guess is that there is a Stop Effect instruction in cues that when moved, allows running Effects to track forward (undesirably).

With no time between shows to actually look at each cue on stage, this did lead to a lot of frantic Stopping of Effects Live, and much clueless scrutiny of whether so and so channels really ought to be in so and so Effect in upcoming cues.

Questions:  Can there be a true Cue Only mode?  What do I need to do in order to rearrange a cue list without this happening?  Would putting a Block on every cue globally before moving anything do it?

Thanks, B

  • Hey Brent,

How about making each dance piece its own cue list, and then make a "master cue list" where cue 1 is a blank cue that executes cue list 1, cue 2 executes cue list 2, etc. Then when you need to change the order of the show, you just need to change the execute command (cue 1 executes cue list 5, cue 2 executes cue list 8, etc). Just make sure that every cue list owns every channel and the first cue of each list is Asserted. This way you don't have to deal with moving cues around and worrying about effects tracking, and you don't have to deal with Cue Only at all, you can still leave the desk in Tracking mode.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Bob, but that's more complex than what I'm hoping for.  Plus, when I have a single cue list in show order, I'm able to see it all en masse on the PSD.

  • Haven't tried this, but what about making every cue an AllFade?

In theory this would make every cue its own discrete set of move instructions (and ideally, effects)

  • Brent,

I don't run EOS/ION, I do run and O2, which I think has a similar logic, and I feel your pain, what I would suggest is this, assign specific cue numbers to specific routines, once you have this recorded the first time all you have to do is use the LINK column on the cue list to link the cues to each other in the SHOW order of the day, this will make the cue list skip around as needed, works like a charm, should only take about 10-15 minutes. Other wise do these boards have a LOAD CUE button??? this is used to run cues out of sequence but makes for a bit more work all through the run of a show.

    Best Of Luck

  • Chaosbob's suggestion of a separate cuelist for each piece is the 'classic' way to do this kind of show - it's how I would have done it on a HogII, and how I do them on Congo.

For this kind of 'mess' where you never find out what's coming until it's started, I would put each cuelist onto it's own Playback as well and either forget about the Main Playback or put my 'safety cues' there.

Each cuelist then Asserts itself at the top, and you just pick the right one when you know what the **** is going on!

All in the same cuelist with 'linking' cues tends to become a mess quite easily, particularly when you add more pieces to the show - and take them away.
