Ion Questions and Ramblings

1.  What happens when an Ion hangs on boot up?  It just freezes, and doesn't work?  This is a pertinent issue.

2.  What's the quickest way to drop all channels to zero?  I thought maybe hitting [Enter] would grab all used channels, and then I could double-tap [Out], but that's not the case.  What's the quickest way for me to do this?

3. When patching a channel to multiple intensity only addresses, it makes an extra unused part.  Case Example:  One channel, two lekos: Channel 5 @ Address 10 + Address 12 --> 5.1 - BLANK, 5.2 - 10, 5.3 - 12.  What's going on here?

  • 1. If this is happening constantly, I would call tech services at 1.800.688.4116

    2. If you press and hold down the "select last" key it will populate the softkeys. One of the choices is "select active." Hit that and then hit "out." I find it quite useful.

    3. You probably already had an address patched in there, and it never got deleted, just unpatched. I thought this behavior went away in the later releases... what version are you running? 1.8 is the latest, and there are so many cool changes. I have had an Ion since they were first released, and I have been so impressed with how much the console has evolved. At any rate you can say "delete" "part" and delete the unused part if its bothering you that much.

  • Hi Charc,

    2.  Brian's got the correct answer, but I find this even a little quicker: Rem Dim a channel that isn't up, without giving it a level.  [1 Rem Dim Enter].  This also works with a channel that is up.  [1 Rem Dim Enter Out].  Both of these you can do without having to press two keys simultaneously.  And, of course there is always Goto Cue 0 and Goto Cue Out.

    Hope that helps, B

  • 1. Unplug keyboards, mice, touchscreens from the console and see if the problems persist.
  • Also:

I'm curious as to what pressing just [Enter] on the command line does.  I think it's just nothing.  On the old Strand 300/500 it would select every active channel (Really darn handy), which would allow you to either proportionally wheel up/down intensity, or use the +/- % keys.

It would be a nice feature to see on the Ion.

  • To synchronise Time:

First of all, decide which console should be the Time Server. This console will be able to set the time and all others will follow it.

    • Exit Ion, click on Settings.
    • Choose the "Network" tab
    • Enable "Network Services"
    • Now on the 'Master' console, choose to enable Time Service as Server
    • On all other consoles, enable Time Service as Client

    That will do it.

As to touchscreens - check your USB connections and recalibrate them. Probably one of the touchscreens was disconnected at boot and the console no longer knows which way around they are.

[+%] and [-%] keys are accessed using a double hit of [+] and [-] respectively.

  • Some additional questions.

I saw that in 1.8 you can use non-dongled laptops with the OLE in mirror mode.  Anne Valentino mentioned this as PC... but was she using it to mean Personal Computer, as opposed to Windows OS laptop, as seems to be the common usage?  I'd love to do this with my Mac.

The manual says very little about setting up a wireless network for using laptops in mirror mode, or iRFRs.  In my system we have two Ions.  In what way would I need to set things up so that one router works for both consoles?  Would I need to have one console always on, or something?  Additionally, am I to understand there is no setup console side besides plugging in the router?

Edit: And while I'm figuring things out.  Why does one patch channels to addresses?  It seems backwards.

Edit: And while I'm complaining.  Why the deuce does one patch channels to addresses?  That just seems backwards.

Because thats the way we do it on moving light consoles. Luckily if you llike too do it backwards, you can push the format button to change it.

  • When you are working with moving lights, patching by channel is going to be more understandable.

You can connect a PC to the network (with or without a client dongle), using the offline software.  This does not yet work native on a mac, but you can do it on a mac running a PC emulation program.   Mac native on line is coming in the next software release.

You can contact tech serve, they can work through any issues with wireless.

    Hope that helps.

  • Ion hangs at bootup-

We had that problem here at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs NY.

are there any audible beeps? This happened to my console. Three beeps, than hang on ION screen. I had to open that puppy up and reseat the memory SIM.

Call ETC factory tech support, they will send you a series of photos on how to open it up (not simple! definately call them!) and talk you thru the memory reseating, which is simple.

Opening and closing the board are much harder than reseating the SIM.

Once this was done, everything worked fine.

    good luck

  • That is the biggest thing I miss from the Insight 3.  Easy access to the circuit board for cleaning and a nifty little storage compartment.  The little black box was a very good place to keep a spare key to the sensor rack!

I guess with more computer guts going into the consoles, ETC doesn't want them to be as easy to open for security reasons.
