Capture and Rem Dim

During big focus calls, there is usually a main team working with the designer, who is calling a lot "add please" and "instead of" commands.  "Instead of" means Rem Dim and the designer takes precedent, but often there are other people doing secondary focus notes and/or troubleshooting requiring channels to remain up through a Rem Dim command.  Currently, the obvious solution is to Park those secondary channels.  However this is a little inconvenient for a couple of reasons: I can't see all of my active channels at once in the same display.  My park status usually has at least several channels Parked for various power supplies and such, plus currently, my designer has about a dozen channels parked out that he hopes to cut.  Therefore a couple or three channels temporarily parked for short side projects don't really jump out when I need to get rid of them.

My wish is that I could simply Capture them and that they not be affected by Rem Dim then I could control them all without leaving the Live display.  As Rem Dim is usually used during focus and channel checks, I don't see that this would realy change the use of Capture during playback.

Can I get an "Oh Yeah!" from the chorus?   ...anybody?

Who's doing what where ?.  Is the LD at the design table calling levels to an operator at the console ?, at the same time there's crew backstage on the RFR ?.

EDIT: Just noticed the "big focus calls" comment, so LD on deck. with operator at console ?, or just the RFR doing channel calls, with crew also asking for other things to happen ? and one very busy RFR operator.

What pops out is 2 options.

    1) Don't park the channels that might get cut, instead do a proportional patch to zero of those dimmers assigned to the channels.  You can write a master macro that re-sets all addresses in the dimming system to proportional level of full, as a restore when and if needed.

2nd EDIT:, You probably would have to write a macro that gets you to Patch, switches to Format by Address, then activate the softkey for Attribute and SK Proportional.  Mostly a workable macro and I use something similar to patch pre-defined addresses to zero.

    2) Second thought is have a laptop in client mode with an outboard monitor, maybe backstage for crew use to operate in Park ?, without stomping on the console ?.  The 2nd monitor for expanded view of what's up in Park, but maybe not needed.

If my space, I'd definitely drag out the laptop, set it up as a client, sit in park and do "other" things from what the RFR is doing.  Or maybe the reverse and do the focus in park on the laptop, as it's easier to see what's going on with addresses and channels, especially with a 2nd LCD.  Then I'd keep the RFR in Live and let other things happen.  As I have never done this, I wonder if you can multitask this way ?.

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.  I really mind getting voted down on the forum, I halfway expect it if anybody decides jump in about this.  But I don't think it ought to be on the merits of not asking for new features.  I assume that you don't consider the console finished.

I'd prefer to discuss this in terms of:

    1) How often and when do you use Capture?  Me, sometimes and only during playback.

    2) How often and when do you use Rem Dim?  Me, a lot but never during playback.

    3) Would this change aid or inconvenience you?

Thanks too for your suggestions, but I don't really need to change my current method.  We are fortunate to have a rolling ION dedicated to deck work so I'm able to manage the different channel states.  I think, though, my suggestion would be a more elegant method and give me more use of the Capture key.

I do like your idea about the proportional patch.  Is there a way collect those ten or twelve channels automatically when he does decide to cut them?  Can you use Query or do you have to hunt them all down in Patch?

Captured channels are not affected by Rem Dim. At least in 1.8, not sure about previous versions. What swv are you using?

I see where you are going with Capture and didn't mean to imply that your idea was being voted on, per se, I just looked at the overall picture to find a way to make current console function do what you want, as well as being unclear as to the device you're attempting this on.  RFR use was assumed as it was a focus session, with the RFR having more limited functionality.

In truth, you've got a more Ion time then I have and are into a more esoteric solution that I will pay attention to for a soltution

In order for the proportional patch to work, I believe you have to apply the proportional level to an address.  Don't think you can do it to a range of channels (not at a 'puter that has off-line on it, so can't check).  That's how I use it to "kill the breaker" as it were, of a range of dimmers at a position, whose channels are across multiple positions.  I was also thinking you were doing this on an RFR, for which a macro is required to get you to  to that depth of the Patch function.  Since you already have an Ion rolling around, access to patch is quicker, though a macro to get you into the proportional section would speed things up.  Still have to type in a range of addresses though, if it varies.  Then another macro to "reset" the patch back out of Attributes and back to Channel as default and then Live.

  • Marc,

I am embarrassed to say that I have tried this since it came to my attention about a year ago.  I must have missed it in the release notes.

I wish I had made this fool of myself last week though, it would have been more useful.

Steve, No worries.  The nature of the forum is to sort of vote on ideas.  I'm happy we can do it cordially- most of the time.

I'll look into the proportional patch thing today.

    Thanks again, B
