accessing multi-universes

Hi Everyone.

I'm still running a fairly low-tech venue.  just 2 universes of DMX, through 5 pin, to the dimmer room and the Opto repeater for the intelligent lighting.

My Ion has the upgraded motherboard and is upgraded to 12 universes.  Running 3.2.8.

Ethernet wire runs from console to FOH sound pit to an un-managed router, which typically connects to the ETC RFR and a client laptop (and today the Multiverse Transmitter).

I was demo-ing a Multiverse wireless DMX system today, and after enough ***** around, I got U3 and U4 working.  (turned on sACN in Shell/Network, and turned on sACN output in patch (that one took a while), and patched a device in each U3 and U4).

I chose U3 and U4, but is there anything I need to do to access other universes between 5 and 12?

or just assign the Multiverse output to U5 and a receiver to U5, adn patch a device to a U5 Address?

Set-up\Device\Local Output only shows Universes 1 - 4

Patching a device to an address in U5 didn't add a Universe 5 to the Local Output list.

Thanks very much.

  • The local outputs you found is too assign different universes to the 5pin connectors at the back of your console.

If your console is already successfully outputting universes 3 and 4 through sACN, adding universe 5 is as simple as patching a channel to an address in universe 5.

The only option blocking specific address is the Allowed Output Address range(s) in the shell (Settings > Network). The default however is too allow a veeery large number of addresses, so that normally shouldn't be a problem.

  • Thanks Moderator.

so I take it there isn't a view port or similar, saying what's being broadcast via sACN or artnet or . . . ..  if it's in the Patch page, and the toggle buttons are correct, its broadcasting whatever is patched.

OK.  i'll just adjust the transmitters and receivers, and repatch into different Universes, to see.

if the Multiverse Transmitter is only good for 5 Universes, and I need to use 10, I guess I need 2 Multiverse units for U3 - 7 and U8 - 12, and patch everything up, and the 1 ethernet wire / router is good to go (other than adjusting the multiverse SHoW ID details, due to the amount of signal being generated).

    Thank you.

  • The Multiverse Transmitter from City theatrical can do 10 universes. But you have to look up the settings and warnings in their documentation

For example our Multiverse Transmitter ShowID is set to 24200 this gives us 2 universes on each radio for a total of 4.

If you have 4 hard dmx connectors on your console, it could be logical to start the wireless patch on universe 5?

  • I've only got 2 hard DMX outputs.  I've used a Gadget from a designer's laptop for access to U3 & U4 in the past.  If I go wireless, I don't see that happening again.

    Logic?  here??? are you new?

    (thanks Koen)
