Lights come on after shutdown

I know this has gone around and around. However I am some what knew to DMX. For along time we had not seen this issue come up. However on Monday I powered our Element 2 down and then one ETC ColorSource Par popped on. I turned the console back on, instrument goes out, power off device instrument comes back on.Power off console goes out.  Not sure what to do, I go down and pull the power.

Next night same routine only this time two ColorSource Par's come on. These are daisy chained. Same process to go through console on, instrument goes out, turn console off , instrument goes on. Go to stage and pull power.

This morning I come in, put power back to instruments and all six in that chain come on while the console is still off.

If anyone has a clue as to why this is happening I could really use the assistance?

Thank you so much for your time.

  • Hi Charles,

could you answer some questions to allow for more assistance?

1.) What Eos Software is running on this Element 2 console? It can be found by pressing the ABOUT button on your console.

2.) What IO / DMX Card Firmware is on this Element 2 Console? This can be found by exiting to the SHELL, and then pressing the Settings Choice on the Screen and then pressing the maintenance tab on the right, and scrolling to bottom and saying which Firmware the one of the following is listed:

3.) How does DMX go from the Element 2 to the Fixtures?

a.) via Network Cable to a Switch to a Gateway? If so, which Switch, Which Gateways and software versions?
b.) via DMX Cable directly to the first fixture with issues?
c.) via DMX Cable to a DMX Splitter?

    d.) is Wireless DMX involved?

    e.) you have no idea?

4.) Are all these fixtures that are coming on - always in the same DMX Line / Chain?

    Thanks

  • Corey,

First thank you for any help you can give.

1.) What Eos Software is running on this Element 2 console? It can be found by pressing the ABOUT button on your console. We are currently running 3.2.10.36 which I believe is the latest update.

It is Four Port I/O HS 1.2.1.9.0.8

3.) How does DMX go from the Element 2 to the Fixtures? c.) via DMX Cable to a DMX Splitter?

CHAUVET DJ Data Stream 8 Flexible DMX Splitter

4.) Are all these fixtures that are coming on - always in the same DMX Line / Chain? Yes they are. Again it started with one, then and now six lights.

Again thank you for your time.

  • Some of our MLs came to us with none-DMX modes. So, when the console goes off and DMX disappears, they go into (what I call) Disco mode and will produce their own "show"!  To add insult to injury if several MLs are downstream on the cable the one not seeing the signal can revert to 'master' mode and the other (slaves) will follow along. The ML instructions need close reading on installation. Probably not related to this particular problem is the fact that the dimmer rack can have instructions to keep lights, alight for some minutes after loss off DMX for safety reasons.

  • Hi Charles,

sorry for the delay - life is so busy!

    Firmwares seem all uptodate.

If this issue is affecting only lights on one dmx line out of the DMX Splitter, could

you swap that dmx cable to another output on the splitter and see if the failure follows?

You could also try putting a DMX-Terminator on the last dmx fixture on the end of that line?

    Another thing -->

Robert's response about Disco mode - got me thinking - some fixtures like our ColorSource Pars,

have Stand-Alone Modes - (S1-xx, P1-xx) = Sequences and Presets , and if the preset is left active on

display - and dmx comes on, then the local preset is ignored in the fixture, until DMX is lost(console turned off and whatever HOLD LAST LOOK settings in the Dmx splitter time out), then the Preset becomes active again.

Check on fixture if you unplug dmx if light goes on, if it does, check on display, a Preset (P1) or so is active.

Press Mode button to turn off the Preset and then you see just the DMX Address and you can replug dmx cable.

    Good Luck!

  • Corey,

Thank you for all your help. It is very much appreciated. A it turns out two of our ColorSource Pars were put into preset and somehow the ColorSource Spots followed days later. The Spots are used as high sides so pretty sure no one messed with them. But the Pars I think I touched it when I was moving the boom they are hung on. So up the ladder I go.

    Thank you again!

  • Robert,

Thank you for your reply. While on the ladder(see reply to Corey) I will be putting a terminator as well and following with other end of chains.

    Thank you for your help!

  • HI Charles,

I am glad you solved that issue. As a tip - since I know that if you mistakenly touch the mode button

during focus or going by the fixture, you can change settings. It is possible to lock and unlock the display to prevent from mistakenly changing modes:

    Lock the User Interface
After you have set up the fixture, you can lock the user interface to pre-vent additional changes.
    1.
Press and hold the Up button and Down button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The display will show Loc to indicate that the user interface is locked.
    2.
To unlock the user interface, press and hold the Up button and Down button simultaneously for 3 seconds.

    Have a good day!
