Managing External Displays / Display Numbering

Hello.

I'm currently working on an EOS Ti with 3 External displays attached. When you unplug the external displays, doing cable management for example, it sometimes happens that the Display numbering changes, which breaks all of our recorded snapshots.
This happened to me last Winter and I just redid the essential Snapshots for the current shows. Yesterday, this happened again, breaking all snapshots again.

Now I'm wondering if there's any way to influence how the Windows backend (I'm aware this is not an EOS issue but rather a Windows issue) numbers the Displays. My naive approach was to unplug every display, restart the desk and then plug in the screens in the correct order.  This method seems to work fine for two Displays, but once you plug in the Third display, The Numbering jumps from 3/4 to 3/5/4 (instead of the expected 3/4/5).

Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have a tested way to get the Display numbers like you want?

Thank you.

  • If you go into the Workspace Layout Menu, in Eos, you can swrap the monitor numbering within Eos.

To get to the Workspace Layout Menu, click on the monitor ID number in the upper left corner on any screen.

The screen will look like this:

    Click on this icon:

The Monitor Mapping dropdown will appear:

If you click on a monitor you want to adjust, the other available monitor numbers will appear. Clicking on one of those swaps your selected one with that number’s monitor.

What’s displayed on the monitors won’t immediately change, but if you select one of your snapshots, the tabs & layout should change appropriately. You may need to do these steps a couple times to get every monitor’s assignment proper.

  • Thank you Jeff! I totally overlooked that you can renumber Monitors inside the software. I was under the impression that the Windows backend gives out the monitor numbering on its own since, after disconnecting monitors from the desk and plugging them back in, it tends to move the numbering around on its own, as described in this forum post. At that time, I wasn't able to find any reference to the Monitor Mapping feature in this forum, only that display numbering jumping around is a Windows issue, so I didn't dig deeper in the Manual. Thanks for making me aware that you can just renumber them in the Workspace Layout Menu!

  • You're right in that the OS does indeed map the displays. The renumbering in the Workspace Layout Menu is a layer on top of that.
