The video makes displaying effects a snap. And inserting into cues. However, I have not gotten effects to work unless I put them into groups and linking the group into the cue. Is there a simpler way to run effects?

Record stores the look that's currently visible on stage. If you have a look including an effect, it will be included in that Record as well.
It would probably help if you explained a bit more what you're trying to achieve and what you tried. Especially knowing what syntax didn't work could help us clear up why something didn't behave as expected.
Good questions
I wanted to look at effects that are already installed to see what I could use.
the video made running effects seem easy
he also made mention of storing an effect in a cue, but I have had no luck with that.

To check an effect you need to apply the effect to a number of fixtures. This could be a group (group 1 effect 901) which will be a circle effect on the fixtures in group 1. Now if group 1 does not have any moving heads then the effect can’t be applied.
once you have the look on stage and an effect running, [record][cue]x[enter]. This will record the effect in the cue.
hope this helps.
Also just be aware that not all effects will work on every fixture you have, for various reasons -- for example a CMY effect only works on fixtures with CMY color mixing, obviously a circle effect only works on moving lights, etc.
Also, effects have different visual impacts based on the lighting fixtures current state: For example, some effects will increase the intensity of a fixture -- that is great if it is off, but if it as full already, it will have no visual effect. Conversely, there are some that only decrease intensity (so the light already needs to be at some level to begin with). Same thing with color effects -- some will need say your RGB LED's to be either off or at full to see the effect running.
Beyond that, you'll want to explore the other videos on effects, because a single "effect" can have very different looks on the exact same lights based on simple adjusting the parameters of the effect like initial channel selection, grouping, offsets, etc.
