Record parameter specific effects

I'm trying to work out the best way to create moving light chases and effects where I only want to run the effect on a specific parameter.

I guess the easiest way to explain what I'm trying to do is give an example. Take 10 moving head wash units, each even numbered unit is red, each odd numbered unit is blue. I want to create an effect where, once it runs, it only remembers the colour information in each step.

A second example may be where I want to 'pulse' a colour along a line of fixtures. Eg. I have 10 wash lights, all of which are in a dark blue, but in the first step unit 1 snaps to red, in step 2 the second unit snaps to red, in step 3 the third unit snaps to red and so on.

On both of these I would like to overlay these particular effects on top of a pan / tilt effect and run the 2 in sync in a cue, so I only want to be able to record the colour information. What are your thoughts on the best ways of creating these effects using Ion?

    I'm not completely  sure what you asking.  I will try to take on the second example.  First I'm going to assume that you would like your fixtures to return to the state that they were in after snapping to red.

    First it is possible to apply effects to specific parameters. 
    Eg 251 thru 255 Magenta Effect 1 Enter

    In this example only the “Magenta” portion of effect 1 will be applied.  This can run at the same time as a focus effect.

    However, this may not be the best approach for this instance as you imply that you would like the full color snap to red.  I would suggest building an “absolute effect” that applies a “Color Palette” for red. 

    When building the the Effect simply build 2 steps.  The first action applies the Pallet the second releases back to the background state. (The values coming from the cue before the effect is applied)

    To set the action to Background highlight the “Level” box and type [At][Enter]
    Note: [At][Enter] is how move instructions are generally removed throughout the console.

    Change the “Time” to 0  which will allow it to snap and change “Dwell” to the length of time you wish to hang on that step.  Make sure you grouping is set to “Spread” and Trail to "Solo"

    I am including a screen shot to show what this effect might look like. 

    Also, what multiple effects applied to channels looks like.  Just keep in mind the limitation is multiple effects applying to a single parameter.

  • Thanks for that! Yes, that's what I'm after. But can you assign particular units in each action? For example would you create an effect like this for all the movers in the rig, but then run it back on selected units by doing 501 thru 504 Effect 1 Enter? And by choosing a colour pallet in the level column, does the effect then automatically ignore focus and beam information?

    The effect applies to focus information as well as color; Beam is left alone. 



    Whether or not anything changes for the channel selection would be based on what information is included in the Focus and Color Palettes. 
    The console is a Move Fade desk so in theory it will not do anything to a channel’s level unless it is specifically told to do so.
