Record parameter specific effects

I'm trying to work out the best way to create moving light chases and effects where I only want to run the effect on a specific parameter.

I guess the easiest way to explain what I'm trying to do is give an example. Take 10 moving head wash units, each even numbered unit is red, each odd numbered unit is blue. I want to create an effect where, once it runs, it only remembers the colour information in each step.

A second example may be where I want to 'pulse' a colour along a line of fixtures. Eg. I have 10 wash lights, all of which are in a dark blue, but in the first step unit 1 snaps to red, in step 2 the second unit snaps to red, in step 3 the third unit snaps to red and so on.

On both of these I would like to overlay these particular effects on top of a pan / tilt effect and run the 2 in sync in a cue, so I only want to be able to record the colour information. What are your thoughts on the best ways of creating these effects using Ion?

I would like to overlay these particular effects on top of a pan / tilt effect and run the 2 in sync in a cue.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • Doh! I started writing this post, but then got sidetracked with teching my show, but I thought I'd post it anyway...

What you are looking for can easily be achieved with Absolute effects. I highly recommend you start playing with these, as they are much more powerful and versatile than step based Effects, particularly for Moving lights. Absolute effects do not have specific channels attached to them, instead you assign any channels (which have those same parameters) to use that effect within a cue (or sub or macro).

For the color chase a two step Absolute effect with the first step as your Red Color Palette, and the next step as your Dark Blue CP, will do exactly what you are looking for. You can then choose which channels to apply it to (e.g. channels 1-5, or channels 11-35), and in a specific sequence by the which specific order (e.g. channels 10-1, or channels 1+3+5+2+4+6). You can also utilize the grouping feature within the effect itself: A grouping of 2 will run the effect across every other light in two groups (so all of your odd numbered units will change in unison then all of your even numbered units will change in unison).

Also, Effects only affect the parameters that are written into the effect. So you can run a color effect and a focus (p/t) effect concurrently without having to worry about them stomping on each other. So in your first cue you can run the Focus Effect then in the second cue just add the Color Effect.

    Hope that helps.
