Random lightning effect

I know this has been dealt with a bit in this forum but would like some clarification.  I have 7 strobes, 7 channels that I would like to fire in a random order, at different intensities.  In the obsession it took about 3 keystrokes for this.  What is the easiest way to record these different looks, intensities and assign them to hold for different times.

So Effect 1--chan 293 thru 295 at 70% random with different step times in between, say rates between 80 and 140.  Hold the effect for 8 seconds and then out.

E 2 wants to have chan 293-298, random, at full, with same rate and hold for 3 seconds.

Next would be a gentle fire flicker effect, 3 diff channels with different flicker rates and intensities.

Any help would be appreciated.  In the middle of tech now.

  • Hi Ken,

I've had a lot of success with using additional cue lists for lightning effects.  I feel I can really finess the intensities and timings in a series of linked cues.  I can then just execute one of the lists as needed.  That said, I tend to like my lightning composed, so I'll leave it to others to comment on step randomization.

My most successful fire effect used the relative effect type.  I drew my flame pattern on the graph, so my flame could undulate and flare as well as flicker.  Even though it repeated, it looked pretty random, and I randomized the effect rate somewhat.  The relative effect has the added benefit of affecting the live intensity, so you can control the absolute brightness of the flame.

  • Josh,

Fire effect idea looks great and will try that.  I could do the link cues but I miss the Obsession simplicty of creating quick and decent lightning effects.

    Best,

    Ken
