MSC over network with Ion?

I was wondering if there is a way to use Midi Show Control with the Ion besides directly plugging in a midi cable. Can an MSC source on the same network be selected? Thanks in advance

  • AFAIK, MSC has to come in via the MIDI port so no joy for an ethernet solution. I am sure somebody from ETC will be along to correct me if I am wrong.

Ion CAN accept UDP strings although the manual is sketchy on examples of what constitutes a legitimate string that will be acted upon. Setting up a proxy service to convert MSC to UDP would not take much effort, assuming the MSC sender is capable of sending its output over ethernet. I've not seen any software that can do this though so if you know of a package, please let us know what it is.

  • Its another purchase, but there is the ETC Show Control gateway.

    To copy from the website.

    • Receive MIDI Timecode via ACN
    • Receive SMPTE Timecode via ACN
    • MIDI In/Out/Thru ports on rear of unit
    • SMPTE In port (3-pin Female XLR) on rear of unit
    • 10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet port (auto-sensing & auto-negotiating) on front of unit
    • Power supplied by PoE (Power over Ethernet) via RJ-45
    • Optional Power supply for non-PoE systems sold separately via external DC power supply

  • Just to add a definitive answer here, as Benjamin posted the link to the product page, -- yes, the Ion supports MSC input via an ETC Net3 Show Control Gateway, as well as locally on the console.  MTC and SMPTE are also supported input via the Show Control Gateway.

  • Thanks everybody, I think this clears the matter up nicely. I have also put in an inquiry to see what UDP strings/commands are available for the Ion. Unless of course someone perusing this forum can give me an answer first...
