ION: Can't record cues as submasters...not sure why.

I'm a brand new ION user (after 15 years as an Insight 2x user), and I can't seem to get my new ION to record cues as submasters.  (All I want to do is record the intensity settings of a given cue as a submaster.  Should be simplicity itself, no?)

I have the faders properly configured and mapped as submasters, and I know they're working because I'm able to record manually set channel intensities as submasters.  But when I bring up a cue and try to record that live look as a submaster, it doesn't work.

Here's what I do: I bring up a cue, admire my handiwork, then hit [Record] [Sub] [5] [Enter].  The ION claims it's recorded, the fader's pilot light lights up green, but when I clear everything out and raise that fader, nothing.  No channels move.  Blackness.

I've quadruple checked my fader settings, have tried rebooting the system twice, have deleted and tried re-recording the submaters more times than I can count.

Why can't I record cues as submasters?  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

  • I just tried it on my Ion running 1.9.6 and it worked. What version of software are you running?  Do you have a sub number showing above the particular fader handle you want to record to? I have all my faders mapped as subs, and I made two different cues. I loaded one cue live on stage then did [Record] [Sub] [3][5] [Enter]. I then went to cue out and brought the sub to full and it worked. I also tried disabling auto playback in the settings and recording to another sub and that worked as well.

  • Thanks for your response.

I've made some progress, though it's still mysterious.  I've found that the submaster is recording the cue intensities, but it's only willing to "play back" those intensities if I'm not in a cue.  That is, if I go to Cue 0, the submaster works fine.  If I'm in a cue, even if all the channels have been brought down to zero and cleared, the submaster doesn't work.

It's as if the cue is inhibiting the submaster somehow.  Strange.

I'm still assuming I have some basic setting wrong somewhere.  (I changed the default setup to Cue Only, for example, and while I can't imagine why that would cause this to happen, I can't help wondering if it's some setting like that causing the issue.)

I appreciate your efforts to help.

  • I can't experiment because I'm doing an event now, but you can try making the sub mode to Latest Takes Precedence (LTP). In Blind go to [Sub] [n] [Enter]. Press [S3] (HTP/LTP) [Enter] to swap modes. You Could also try messing with the other sub setting.

  • I just reread your post again and part of the issue is that your levels are manual. My subs are in HTP mode and while levels are manual (Red) my sub will not control them even if I press clear to unselect the channel(s).

  • YES!  That was it, the sub had to be set to LPT mode.  (I'll be honest, I'm not sure I understand why that's the case--if all the channels are at zero, what exactly is the "Highest" that's taking Precedence?--but hell, it works now, so for the moment I'm happy.  I'll try to wrap my brain around it later.)

Thank you VERY much for your generous assitance.

  • Although you've taken channels to zero, it sounds like they are not released. Try

    {go to cue} 0 [enter]

    {select manual} @ [enter].

Then try using the sub. {select manual} is soft-key 3.

There are other ways of doing this - but try this one to see if it resolves the problem.

(Can someone confirm this is correct - I'm not in front of a console at the moment!)
