The Ion only accepts Midi Show Control, or MSC, if your Midi device can output this then you are set.  Here is a blurb from the Manual:

When Ion receives a command from a MIDI source, it will look for and support the following MIDI
commands in the following ways:
• Go Runs a cue
• Stop Pauses a cue
• Resume Resumes a paused cue
• Set Controls a submaster, playback, or grandmaster
• Fire Runs a macro

Information about MSC is on page 283-285, with configuration information on page 305 of the 1.7 user manual.

So it looks like I need to find a MSC program or device that accepts audio triggers.  Does anyone know of one they can recommend?

Take a look at http://response-box.com/gear/  and give John Chapman a shout (john@response-box.com) He's written me some code for other projects. 

His box may or may not do what you want, but he's pretty great at helping solve these kind of midi questions.  The box has multiple inputs / outputs that depending on firmware do all sorts of protocol changes. (Midinotes to DMX, Midinotes to DMX Scene, DMX to MSC or Midi Notes, RS-232 to DMX etc...) It may also be overkill.
