Fading effects into each other

Hey

I'm currently having a bit of trouble nicely fading two intensity effects into each other.

Currently I have a step based effect on channel 131 Thru 148 doing a nice wave effect from left to right. Its running as a negative step based effect, so most of the channels are at 70% then it runs a wave pattern across the selected lights, taking out one at a time.

Then I want it to fade nicely between that and a kind of fountain chase effect. This is a Linear effect and is essentially working in a kind of positive mode.

The problem is that when moving from one effect to the other I get a nasty blackout between the two. Instead of a nice fade. Despite changing cue times or changing exit/entry attributes for the effects.

I think the main problem is that one is negative and one is essentially positive (although you can't seem to change the attributes for linear effects), but I'm finding it hard to make the linear effect as a step based.

I can nicely fade the effects entering each other if I manually do it from a effect sub bit if I try to do it through playback I get a snap between the two and a blackout. It is as if the second effect is asserting itself.

I'd really like the sequence to be on recorded into playback, and as such tried to see if I could make a macro that would fade subs over time, but I'm not sure that's possible? they seem to snap when ever I give them a time e.g [Sub] [8] [@] [Full] [Sneak] [5] [Enter]

Has anyone come across and solved this problem.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

  • Hi Sammy,

There are currently some issues with crossfading between certain effects which the guys are working hard on fixing.

When you say intensity effects, what type of effect are you using? Step or Absolute possibly?! Depending on what you're doing you may be able to achieve the same thing with a Linear effect on the Intensity parameter which will crossfade better.

Alternatively you can run the second effect on a second cue list and link to it from your primary list, this will also cross fade better!

    Hope that's a help

  • Hey thanks Dan,

Just tried these methods and still having a few teething problems.

I've not used pixel mapping before but would going down that method work? The 18 channels are spread out along the bottom of a cyc wall. So essentiall I've got a chase running left to right then moving into a kind of random fountain chase. As I don't know my h about pixel mapping I'm not sure if these two effects are possible with the generic effects provided by tC

  • Hi Sammy

As Dan said this is a known problem unfortunately and not a quick fix.

I think the best work around for now is to create two other cuelist and not effects and then execute these from your main list.

If you need any help with this us let us know.

  • Hi Nick and Dan,

    Thanks for the advice.

In the end we tried something else as I couldn't figure out how to use multiple cue lists.

The problem was that because I had a loop running on one of the cue lists it kept asserting over the other, and I couldn't find a way of gently fading it out. Also making a cue list to do the effect never really looked the same as assigning a effect to the channels. I presume you shouldn't use loops, but this was a really quick effect and creating that many cues for a effect seemed like a very long way around.

I look forward to seeing the effects being fixed, It's the first time I've really been stumped on how to do somethings. I'd love to be able to reverse linear effects aswell as do negative and positive on them. I think I could have possibly done a lot more if that was possible. Also yesterday I really wanted to change the Size of a Step based effect down to like 50% of what it is, just for a single cue. I couldn't seem to be able to do that.

Anyway keep up the hard work ETC and thanks for the advice.

  • I don't know if this would have solved your problem, but pixel mapping might have solved it for you. We're doing some really cool things with pixel mapping (with just pars!) and I know if we tried to take the time to program the effects & chases using traditional effects it would take days, instead of the minutes it's taking. The initial setup can take some time, but once it's setup, you can achieve some pretty awesome effects with very little effort.
  • Cheers Jon,

I think when I've got some quiet time I'm gonna get these pars pixeled up and try it out. I havn't ever used pixel mapping yet and as such wasn't confident enough to be able to set it up quickly and achieve the look the designer was going for.

I definately think I should see whats achieveable with the feature with this rig.
