WH2 Library generator help

I've written a fixture library for a new Chauvet moving light (which is actually pretty decent for $999)
I've got everything working, but some of the parameters are in weird places, and I"m having a problem with 'fine pan/tilt'
I'm hoping someone can help.

First, the 'fine pan tilt' is coming up as a seperate parameter on the next page of wheels, and does not work as 'pig + pan wheel = fine pan' which is what I want. the wheels are laid out like this: pan, tilt, fine pan, fine tilt


second, i'm wondering if there is a way to choose which wheels a parameter shows up on? basically I want the 'position' wheels to be laid out as: Intensity, pan, tilt (with pig + pan or tilt yielding fine pan/tilt

    The problem is that your fixture's protocol has does not have the pan course/fine channels in sequential order. The Wholehog 2 can only lock the channels together when they fall right after each other in the protocol (pan, pan fine, tilt, tilt fine). Otherwise you end up with what you describe.

    As for changing the order of how things appear on the wheels... it can be done by manipulating the "function.txt" file of a show. However this is NOT suggested. If changes are made to this file after any programming, then the show will get corrupted. Also if you try to merge, add fixtures or other functions the show may become corrupted. It is best to NOT modify this file, but feel free to play around with a blank show file and just use caution and make many backups (and try loading them to ensure they work).
  • Brad, if those fine pan tilt channels need to be sequential, how does the desk know to use "pig + wheel" to access them? is that something I can add to the fixture library?
    What I mean is this: my wheels currently are pan, tilt, fine pan ..... in order to get fine tilt I have to hit "more". So is it possible to make that 3rd wheel use "pig + wheel" to access the 4th channel (fine tilt) considering that they are sequential?

    The only way to get the "Pig+Wheel" functionality you are describing is to create a pan or tilt parameter that is 16bit. You do this by setting the "type = ltp16bit". Now the console will take the current DMX channel and the NEXT DMX channel and tie them together. This is not possible with the DMX protocol of your fixture. This was a common problem with the Clay Paky fixtures as well.

    In addition to causing positioning problems, it also means that the desk will crossfade your movements in 8-bit instead of 16-bit resulting in steppy movement. Most manufacturers have the course/fine channels sequential in their protocols to allow easy 16-bit implementations. You should contact your fixture manufacturer and ask them to offer a different protocol.
  • I went back and looked at the dmx chart for the fixture. I made a mistake in the library, the fixture does actually have 16bit pan tilt. but the channels are in the correct order so I guess it still won't work.

    Its a new fixture Chauvet is debuting at LDI, we picked up 6 of them at a really good price. I've only turned them on once, but my first impression is pretty good for a 250w fixture in the $1k range.

    If I hear you right, and the channel on the fixture DMX layout are in the correct order, as per Brad, then you *CAN* get what you want. I think what you are not realizing is that using 16 bit parameters on a Hog does *NOT* get you a fine and a coarse wheel for the parameters, but rather a single wheel with 16 bit resolution, and the ability to hit pig and access fine mode.

    For this type of operation, your Hog personality would look like this for pan and tilt:

  • Tim, The fixture has 16bit pan/tilt, and the dmx chart also says fine pan and tilt.

    so this being the case, would it work.

    in that order. Seems that someone at Chauvet was asleep at the wheel when they designed this one . . . .

  • ok, I'll contact Chauvet. Seems like they do this will all their moving heads.
    I've been looking at other manufacturers librarys and it seems like they just have pan and tilt at 16 bit. so when you write a library do you just leave out the fine pan and tilt if they are in the correct order, and the desk knows what to do with it?
  • Look back at the config file clip I posted in post #7 - nothing is left out . . . when you tell the Hog to use "ltp16bit" you *ARE* telling it to use both coarse and fine. What happens is that instead of two parameters 8 bits in size, they run as one parameter 16 bits in size, and span both channels. Note that for simple single channel parameters you use things like "ltp8bit" to only run on one channel. You will also see things listed in some fixture definitions as "Pan MSB" and Pan LSB" which refers to the same thing - most significant byte and least significant byte, IE

    12345678 12345678 is two bytes. The group of 8 on the left is MSB and the right is LSB. Each DMX channel represents one bit, and there are 8 per byte, 1 through 8. Combine to a 16 bit parameter (such as 16 bit pan tilt) and the data is the same, but the console sees it as:

    12345678 91111111
    0123456

    Note also that the ranges and center values change on a 16 bit parameter - 8 bit parameters are 0 to 255 and 16 bit parameters are 0 to 65535, with 128 and 32768 being the center values respectively.

    For more detail, download the Hog-2 manual - it has more detail than the Hog 1000 manual on fixture libraries, and gives good explanations of all this stuff.

    I made my pan and tilt 16bit and now wheel 1 is pan and pig + wheel 1 is tilt.
    so I have to go back and redo it. now when I do, do I make pan/tilt and fine pan/tilt all 8bit, or will that confuse the desk?

    Yup - if the fixture is wrong (which it is . . . ) you can never get this to work on this desk. Changing the personality should not bother the desk, since it is read every time you boot it, and you most likely don't have any cues written.

    Yet one more reason, as well, that I avoid the cheap stuff - it only seems like a good deal until you try to use/maintain 'em . . .
