So i am considering selling my Hog 2 system and upgrading to a new Hog Desk. I am torn between what console to go with. Deciding what i want to buy is kinda tricky for me. Cost being one factor, not a major one, its obvious that i want to lean toward the Road Hog. now being the hog 3 desk is the most expensive and most feature oriented i naturally want to get that desk. where im confused is this. I have a friend that i have worked with, that is a very established LD and can have basically whatever he wants and he chooses a full boar/wing setup. Now I am a rental house and small tours LD. my shows almost never go over 4 universes, and im usually about 40-60 fixtures and some media. now i have used the road hog and full boar on festivals and random one offs and i like them both. so is it worth me spending double the cost to get the HOG 3 desk or would it make more sense to get a road hog, a wing, a seperate monitor and all the accesories and still come out cheaper than the hog 3 desk. any advice would be greatly appriciated.
From the sound of it you probably would be best served with a Full Boar. Cost is less than a full H3, but you still have the ability to add two monitors, as well as networking for remote PCs etc. Regular Roadhag has no networking capabilities if it matters to you. Plus the Full Boar is more "expandable" should the need arise in the future. I find even the small tours hit festivals where the normal is 6 to 8 universes these days.
yes i was thinking the same thing, currently on my hog 2 setup i have the wing and i have a great system for one offs using the 24 total masters and a few virtual masters. i also use 2 external screens and the remote unit (mostly for trackball function) so i would want to do 2 playback wings giving me 30 master total as well as 4 touch screens. im not sure the road hog can expand that much. i am already familiar with the hog 3 platform thanks to hog 3pc and one offs with a full boar. i like the remote focus as i do that currently via wireless midi and my touchsreen tablet. all these points toward the full boar. thanks for the advice

The regular Roadhog can do up to 8 wings as all the other desks, but it will not do any more than a single external monitor....and then only with a USB outboard device.
The Roadhog can do MIDI, but again it requires another outboard USB device to do this.
Sounds like you will be better served all around with a Full Boar to get everything you want integrated into the same unit for the sake of simplicity and stability.
The FB is a great desk, at a fair price providing good feature set and output capability. However, I have always preferred the "sleeker" Hog 3 console over the FB. It feels nicer, its physically slimmer, the screens are adjustable which helps your seating position, the extra buttons around the screen make for easier selections too. I could go on ;)
I suggest you ask your HES dealer to set-up a demo, sit in front of both and practice some programming and see how they feel. Also, if your used to having a Hog 2 wing, the Wholehog 3 has an expansion wing similar which matches the Hog 3 and looks stunning, not to mention provides you with another 40 playbacks!
We have both H3 and RHFB and both have advantages.
I really like the H3 screen hard buttons more than touchscreen buttons in RHFB. And in H3 you get the intensity wheel (with I +/- buttons) and rate wheel. I use them and miss them in RHFB. The screen adjustment is nice. All metal feeling is nice. All and all H3 is somehow nice...
But RHFB is more like a ready-to-go package with dmx straight out of console and usb backup (ver 3.2 should fix this for H3 also?). And it still has all networking possibilities and its expandable like H3.
We got our H3 when FullBoar was not yet available but if it would have existed back then I think we would have leaned towards RHFB...
The best of features: artnet port, infinite dmx universe, control whell... and short, with the new software update, many new ... We strongly recommend a hog3 ... more powerful! :-)
so for a quick clarification if i got a road hog would i be able to do 2 road hog playback wings and get use out of both monitors or would i only be able to use 1 road hog wing with the touchscreen. im confused because you say up to 8 wings but only 1 external touchscreen
No, Road Hog is limited to 4 universes total with no way to expand it.
It's a great desk for installs where you know you won't go over 4 universes, but other than that, the Full Boar is what you need. You can expand a Full Boar with USB widgets (up to either 8 or 12 universes total, I forget), and with DP8000s.

Darn, I was hoping it was expandable via either the widgets or with a road hog wing with the super widget installed. Seems like it wouldn't be too much of a stretch,
I have both the H3 and iPC. The iPC cost a fraction of the price. It lacks exactly the same features the RH does in terms of physical buttons, but it has full networking and expandability with widgets and wings.
They can be picked up for about £3500 and are well worth it.
