Midi & Road Hog

Dear Hog World...

Currently setup in a theatre club we want to get the show control machine to activate the show cue sequence.

Show control is Ableton, for testing purposes I have downloaded a keyboard program that can output Midi at the stroke of a virtual keyboard.

The device to used on the road hog is the M-Audio Midisport Uno.

We have searched through the forums for instructions and tried many setup sequences.

We can see the Midi lights flashing on the M-Audio device, however we cannot see if the console is receiving or being activated.

Setup notes:
- Midi Note Mapping is Active
- Midi Note mapping is setup similar to these settings (housetohalf.net/Housetohalf/iPhone.html)
- Timecode has been selected to receive midi
- Cue list Options - I/O settings shows only timecode source as 1:Console

Our questions:
- Is there something specific that tells the console to start timecode or trigger a cue list
- is there an icon somewhere that shows that the console is receiving the midi signal

If you can help, this would be ideal.

Regards,

Ryan
  • So are you trying to send midi timecode to the console or midi notes or sysex midi messages. Each one of those requires different things to be enabled/configured in the Wholehog software.
  • We are trying to get the midi notes to control the console.

It would be nice to do timecode instead, but we're in testing phase if the notes work we will then get the timecode to work.
  • We are trying to get the midi notes to control the console.

Are you able to help us identify the missing link in this setup??

  • Setup-> Control Panel:
    Select your Mididevice

    Setup -> Network:
    Select your Console
There is Tab Midi Note Mapping, here you can configure the midinotes to your needs, like trigger comment macros, playback control and so
In the Manual which you can also find in the console go to section 28.3
  • Thanks for this, we followed these steps before.
Unfortunately we are not seeing any triggering on the console.
The device is receiving midi in, we can see this as the led indicator flashes every time we transmit midi.

    Any thoughts??

Would it be better to assign midi keys to trigger time code?

There you can see what the console receives
    Setup - Midi
    Next to the DMX Window
  • Ryan, what console function did you assign for midi notes coming in on midi channel one?

This can be found in: Setup, network, right click on console 1, settings, midi note mappings.
  • Hey guys,

Really appreciate all your help, haven't quite got there yet.

"MLorenz" - in the first picture below you will see the options that we get when we hit 'setup'. We don't get a Midi tab that will show us what the console is receiving.

"c_muenchow" - I have listed some images below in chronological order of the setup functions and the midi note mapping.
Today we saw that the midi keyboard actually triggered something on the console but to our confusion we don't know how it go to this. For us the keyboard was key 2&3 which activated playback fader 8, on and off. Nothing else happened - nothing that we could see.

Please can you review the images and let us know your thoughts.

Alternately we are thinking that it might also be beneficial just to trigger the internal timecode and assign a timecode number per show cuelist.
Let us know what you think so we don't continue to mess around too much futher.

Thank you for all your assistance so far, hopefully we get there ;)

  • Ah sorry my fault...

It is holding OPEN not Setup...
There you will see the Midi Viewer Button.
Pushing this will open a Window where you can see the incoming Mididata

For example in your setting you need to send to trigger a go on master 1 console playbackbar:

    Midi Channel 3
Note 1 any velocity higher than 0

a Flash for the same fader would be:

    Midi Channel 3
Note 3 any velocity higher than 0

Could you please let us see the Midi Viewer, this will help to analyze your incoming midi-data. Seems that your keyboard is not mapped propper.
You can also use midi-timecode... It depends on your show and what you would like to do...
