Need help advising IT department on setting up a laptop of ION mirroring

So I spent way too long being very frustrated today...and ultimately defeated, trying to get a customer's laptop to work in mirror mode with ION.

I have pretty much concluded that it is somehow related to the firewall setting.  I know it is the laptop because I can connect with my laptop just fine.

The machine in question is running Win 7/enterprise in a university....very locked down.  It says the firewall is disabled...but it doesn’t act like it is...and I am not able to change it because of permissions.  It seems to always flag the network connection as PUBLIC...but doesn't let me modify it to anything else.

A clue is that NET2Config can not discover anything on the network...once again, my machine can find all the NET2 nodes and dimmers just fine.

I have tried reinstalling both NET2Config and Nomad as administrator (who know what that really means when it is so locked down).

I have been asked to send the schools IT department a detailed email explaining what needs to be done to make this work.  From what I gathered, the machine needs to allow the following through the firewall:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ETC\Eos\Eos.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\ETC\VersionDetect\ETCVersionDetect.exe

C:\Windows\System32\hasplmp.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\slpd.exe

 

Am I missing anything?  What other advice/info should I give the IT folks?

    sorry you are having difficulty getting the mirror mode connected. 

    Could you answer these questions in the meantime until my colleagues get back to you with your answers:

    1.)What are the complete network details of both the Ion

    and Laptop? For example: 

    Ion Ip Address: 10.101.100.101

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    WindowsGateway IP: 10.101.1.1

    Laptop IP: 10.101.1.101

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    WindowsGateway IP: 10.101.1.1

    2.) how are you physically connected to Laptop from Ion? 

    A.) Cross over cable?    

    B) Switch? 

    3.) you say you cant see Nodes in Net2Config, but you can't see nodes from your laptop. from where can you see the nodes then? 

    4.) can you ping the ip of ion from laptop? ping function is in Setup->Network Tab

    5.) what kind of switch is used between ion and laptop? 

    a.) unmanaged = good

    b.) managed: what make/model? Some easy managed switches filter lighting data like ACN which is needed to 

    sync mirror mode. sACN will continue to work to turn on/off lights, - just no sync. 

    6.) What happens when you try to connect laptop with Ion? At Start Shell are you offered the Mirror/Mode Option?

    ION: 10.101.100.101 - 255.255.0.0 - 10.101.1.1
    Laptop (dhcp assigned by ION): 10.101.50.101 - 255.255.0.0 - 10.101.1.1
    My Laptop (dhcp assigned by ION): 10.101.50.102 - 255.255.0.0 - 10.101.1.1

    Laptop <-wired->5-port unmanaged switch
    ION<-wired-> to same switch
    same switch <-wired-> the rest of the lighting network (2 managed switches, 5 CEM+racks in two locations, Unison CMEi, a few NET2 2 port & 4 port nodes)

    5 port linksys supplied with original Emphasis

    I CAN see nodes from MY MACHINE...but not the customer's machine

    I can ping from laptop to ION (<2ms no lossed packets) . I didn't try to ping the laptop from ION, though.

    The managed switches supplied by ETC in system a bunch of years ago. They are NOT between the laptop and ION.

    It offers mirror and I try to connect...but it can not find any masters. Once again, my machine is able to connect in mirror mode no problem, and both laptops are getting IP via DHCP from ION correctly.

    When will you be on site again?

    1.) It would be good to get on the customer's laptop: 

    Run->cmd->Ipconfig and see what the Network details there are. There maybe a problem if it has two Windows Gateways listed. You would need to get into the windows network settings, and delete the second windows gateway ip that is listed (in advanced settings) 

    2.) Customer's Laptop -> Run->services.msc - make sure SLP 

    is running! 

    3.) Would be good to see if you can ping customer's laptop from Ion. 

    4.) Both Eos Nomad on customer's laptop and Ion need to have the same exact Eos software version and language! What are the versions on both? 

    5.) when you press MirrorMode on customer's Laptop - you get an info screen saying can't connect to Master - below that message you can click on Troubleshooting, and then on the following display in th right side of display should be Ion listed.

    is there a red X crossed over that Ion? If not you should be able to click it and it will connect. 

    6.) You installesmd Nomad as Admin? did you also run nomad as admin? (right click icon , run as Admin)
