RFR shutting down - Battery Issue??

Has anyone had this issue:

The RFR is not wanting to work when it's not plugged into its charging cord. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. I checked to see if it was just that the batteries may be run down and charged it for 24 hours. No change. It boots up fine, finds the base station fine. Works fine in every way. Goes dead once I unplug it. Could it be a battery issue? Could something have come loose?

  • Howdy Sandi,

after you have checked your rechargeable batteries to make sure they are good (check the

voltage with a volt meter) - then please contact an ETC - Tech Services Phone Support nearest you.

Rebooting constantly sounds like a possibly known problem.

  • I had the same problem with my RFR.  Hold it up to your ear and shake it.  Do you hear anything moving?.  I opened mine up and found out the terminals were not touching the battery,  I bent the prongs back and all is well

  • I had the same issue 2 months ago during Full tech prep the night before opening, AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!  A week later I had time to check out the situation and found the battery prongs had bent themselves away from the battery.

The FIX:: Open up the RFR (as if to change the batteries) ; remove the batteries, push the negative prongs inward(towards the batteries) reinstall the batteries; replace the cover removed earlier; turn on the RFR (assuming the batteries have a charge); the RFR should work just fine

All I can say is Thankfully the Director persuaded the checkbook to purchase the EOS RVI.

  • It was the batteries. Replaced them & adjusted the conections. Life is good.

  • This has become a hot topic in the past couple of weeks.  If you generally recharge your RFR without letting the batteries discharge (or get close to), it will shorten the battery life.  So for those of you who use the RFR for a couple of hours a day and then charge it, you can expect a short battery life.  We've had a number of RFRs returned to the factory, only to discover the batteries need to be replaced.

This is sort of the trade off for using easily available rechargeable, cost effective (i.e. cheap) batteries.  You can get the batteries anywhere, they don't cost much, but their life cycle is affected by the recharge pattern.

  • Yes we had similar problems with ours. try replacing the batteries first. there were other things wrong with it that forced them to replace it. but once we replaced the batteries we did get it to work without being connected to the charger. i still don't like the lag time between key strokes.

  • I know about lifespans of recharble bateries, and fully understand them. I'm wondering why the battery terminals appear to be steel instead of spring steel. If the terminals are spring steel then they loose their 'spring' too easy. As easy it is to fix the problem on site it's still anoying.

Has ETC found a better metal to replace those manufactured/sold prior to 2009?

    Jake.
