Encoder Module

How about a usb encoder module? Four encoders, just like on the programer and consoles that I can just add to my tabletPC to help focus fixtures a bit easier. I love my tablet as a remote, but pan and tilt can be a bit tricky without real encoders.

Pleeeeeeease! I'll be your best friend!

  • aw man, the 3PC-on-a-Tablet experience has been just sittin there on the top of my Supreme Ridiculousness list.

i'll tell ya, it's such an easy fix, too. i sometimes stay up late at night just wondering what revolutionary and mind-blowing stunt my hog's about to bust out with, that this issue isn't worthy of addressing just yet...

and it doesn't even need to be perfect. i'd be thrilled to have my stylus work, even if it means i have to lift my mouse to continue rolling down once i've gotten to the bottom of the screen (for those.... rare..... times when i use a mouse on my tablet's encoder wheels....????)

seriously. if GetSystemMetrics(SM_TABLETPC) says i'm on a tablet, i'd like for my cursor to not be moved out from under me while i'm trying to work. that's all.

i don't even mind having context menus pop up underneath my hand.

and just so we all know, the stylus's enemies:
    encoder wheels
    i-wheel
    rate wheel
    trackball
  • I think also a support for 3dconnexion SpaceNavigator and Spacetraveller would be a pretty nice...
  • Yep. That's whet I'm talkin 'bout.

  • Why not just use a piglet. Like the one I built using a small touchscreen pc and a programming wing. It is so much nicer having the actual wing. I haven't put a shoulder strap on it but that is comming next. Even though the pc is light the wing is a little heavy.
  • has anyone tried using the X-keys shuttle/jog unit with Hog3PC? www.xkeys.com/techdocs/specifications/spcxps08usb.pdf
  • There is another cool jog shuttle wheel made by Contour Design Inc. that is even smaller.

I use this with another pc based console. I am just not sure how to assign it to an encoder since there is no keyboard assignment to program it to. That I know of.
  • Yeah Josh...that was my question too (whether the X-keys or yours) is how to set it up if there are no shortcuts.

    Hmmm....

    Lee,

That's nice, but it's still a bit too bulky for me. Is that the Q1? I looked at that, but after talking to Tom, I realized that there are key combinations that you can't do with a straight TabletPC. I opted for the convertible Lenovo, which gives me full touch screen ability plus a real keyboard that acts as the programmer...now I just need a small module with four encoders to help with focusing.

Yes, there is no mapping of the encoders. This is why I think HES should come up with something.
  • Hey, I'm all for ENCODERS that could be attached to a tablet....:headbang:

Where do I sign up?

  • encoder wheels that don't go schizo
a trackball right at the top, so half the screen isn't eaten by front panel
a latching shift key, to enable everything from Fine adjustments to knockout to garbage collect.
if your environment requires 3PC to "Run as Administrator", this utility must also "Run as Administrator"
  • What was the last build that the encoder worked with. Just tried and got error message with .net framework and shutdown.
  • yeah, this is something i threw together on a monday, so there's not a lot of helpful error checking. for that i'm sorry.

i see it working just fine against 1809.

without knowing what error you recieved (and what state the program was in: before the icon appears in the system tray / before the encoders appear on the programmer or front panel / during normal use *AND* whether 3PC was started before the encoders, after the encoders, or not running at all), it's kinda hard to say what could be going on.

the only thing i can think of that could cause a critical error is not having both the .Net Framework 2.0 (again, version 2.0, not just 1.0 or 1.1 or 3.0 or 3.5...) and Hog3PC installed on the machine you're trying to use the encoders on.

i'm happy to take the time to figure it out, just let me know what your error is, what state the software's in, and that you're absolutely certain that you have the requiremed software installed, and i'll get on it.
  • Hi
I`ve tried the X-keys and actually installed 8 Hog3Pc with X-keys in different tv studios. The problem is that I dont seem to be able to asaign any of the encoder wheels to the Jog`n shuttle wheel. The only thing I`ve been able to do is make a macro, that each step on the wheel is "@+1%", this will make the wheel increase the dimmer value 1%. So its fine as long you are just using dimmers. But if anyone has used it in another way, please let me know.

    Cheers
