Designer Playback Lockout Feature

I wanted to know if there is a way a designer can be a second user (so they can change screens independently), but be locked out from being able to run cues, record, update?  I know you could remove the keyboard at the designer desk, but some have their own custom keyboard to move around the system (which means they do what they want).

  • Not able to check right now, but couldn't you partition them to no channels? Then when they do try to do something they cannot control anything.

  • Sadly partition does not help, and if you type a channel, the system will ask if you want to take control of this channel.   I had a long talk with the LD for the opera today.  What we would really like is a mirror style mode (where monitor sizes (wide or square) does not have to be the same between each of us) (In mirror mode they need to be). Plus have it so the designer cannot make changes, run cues, delete, but can have independent control of his screen layouts.

In mirror mode, if the LD changes his screen or zooms in, it affects me in the booth.  If you set the system up as second user for the LD, they now can control their own screens (which is good), but the LD can still make changes, run cues and record.  However, they cannot see your command line, so you have to build one for them on a magic sheet.  Lastly, most LDs like it when you enter a channel, the the screen jumps to the right channel page automatically to show level.  This does not happen set up as a second user.

I really cannot come up the an ideal solution, so hope the gods of programming maybe could come up with something for the future.  I would love a LD mode where they:

Can control their own screens (with own resolutions), page up and down/zoom independently, see my command line, if in live channel screen see the correct page based on what the programmer is typing, but are locked out from making show changes (record, delete, etc...)

I know this is a tall order, but I just have to ask :-)

  • One way might be using x-keys. You could program the keys to whatever you want them to be and not have spacebar (GO) and record/update on them. Or you record snapshots and macros and load them onto the buttons of your RVI (I think that works....)

  • I never mirror, but am always the same user as the designer. As suggested having an x-keys that has page, flexi, snapshots, live, blind, next, last, and tab on it eliminates the ability to do more than that unless they get out the keyboard. This way they can zoom and flexi to their hearts content without affecting how ou see your screens. They watch your command line (and you can watch their's) and the screens move with keystrokes. If you need to make marks or do other things without design watching I make a macro that puts me into another user to clean things up, then go back to shared user. Try this out. Best of luck.

  • Hey Jay,

I like the Macro idea too.

  • Have you actually run into this or is it a hypothetical question ?

If an actual problem, I'd very nicely explain to the designer to please not give in to the temptation to modify levels and otherwise do what the console operator is supposed to do.  It makes for a difficult time for the operator to keep track of the things they need to do.  As example, what would happen if at a slow moment the console op' decides to hit Shift/Update as a save, while the LD is adjusting levels ?.  There's a division of labor for a reason.

  • My thoughts exactly.  Our system is going into our first full season and I can see this becoming an issue with some who want to tweak.  I think the X keys will help as I can just limit what can be done.  I just did not want to give a designer a full keyboard, thus full control.  Too much risk as you noted.
